Reskin vs Build From Scratch: The Honest Economics of Ready-Made Apps

A ready-made app licence plus customization can put you on the stores in weeks for a fraction of scratch-build cost — when the base code deserves it.

We sit on both sides of this trade: we sell ready-made app source codes and we build apps from scratch for clients. So here is the honest version of the maths, including the parts that sales pages skip.

When a reskin is simply the right call

If a proven codebase already does 80% of what your business needs — a fitness app, a quiz or puzzle game, a booking tool, an e-book store — then buying a licence and customizing it buys you months. Your money goes into the things users actually see: your brand, your content, your ad and payment accounts, and store-ready polish. Typical timeline: one to two weeks for a visual reskin, three to five weeks with new features and store publishing.

Where reskins go wrong

  • Buying on screenshots: the demo looks great, the code underneath is unmaintainable. We audit code before quoting — and tell you if an item is a trap.
  • Keeping the template's accounts: AdMob, Firebase and API keys must move to accounts you own, or you never really own the app.
  • Ignoring policy: template defaults (ad placements, permissions, privacy text) frequently violate current store rules and need correcting before submission.
  • Feature creep: bolting five custom modules onto a template can exceed scratch cost. Past a threshold, scratch is cheaper and cleaner.

The cost sketch, honestly

Typical shape of the maths: the licence itself is small (most quality items cost less than a day of development), a professional reskin runs a fraction of a scratch build, and even reskin-plus-features-plus-publishing usually lands at 25–40% of building the same app from zero. The scratch build starts winning only when your feature list rewrites the template's core — as a rule of thumb, when custom work would exceed roughly half of scratch cost, we quote both paths and usually recommend scratch for the cleaner foundation.

Red flags when buying any item

  • Last update more than ~6 months old — it likely misses current target-API and SDK requirements.
  • Author comments full of unanswered support questions — that silence is your future.
  • No demo APK, or a demo that stutters on a real mid-range device.
  • Screenshots that avoid showing real screens (all marketing frames) — often hiding dated UI.
  • Suspiciously broad feature lists — 40 features usually means 40 half-features.
Pro tip

Licence compliance matters when you scale: one Regular licence covers one end product. Publishing five reskins of the same item means five licences — cheap insurance compared to a marketplace dispute after your apps are earning.

The break-even rule of thumb

If your changes touch mainly the surface (branding, content, configuration, modest features), reskin economics are unbeatable. If your changes rewrite the core flows, data model or backend, you are paying template-navigation tax on every hour — build from scratch with a clean architecture instead. We will run this comparison against your actual requirements before you spend anything, and quote both paths in writing.
