ASO Basics That Actually Move Installs (Before You Buy a Single Ad)

Paid campaigns rent installs; your store listing owns them. The handful of App Store Optimization moves with measurable impact — and the myths to skip.

Every install your listing wins organically makes every paid campaign cheaper too — because ads ultimately land on the same listing. Yet most apps ship with a listing written in an afternoon. App Store Optimization is not a dark art; a few fundamentals do most of the work.

The elements in order of impact

  • Icon: the single highest-leverage pixel-set you own. Test bold, single-subject icons against the category's visual noise.
  • Title + subtitle (iOS) / title + short description (Android): lead with the keyword phrase real users type, not your brand slogan.
  • First two screenshots: treat them as ads — one benefit headline each, real UI, readable at thumbnail size.
  • Ratings velocity: in-app review prompts at genuine happy moments (level complete, task done), never at first open.
  • Long description (Android): keyword coverage written for humans; Google actually indexes it.

What we skip

Keyword-stuffed titles (penalized and ugly), buying reviews (a ban risk that also poisons your data), and obsessing over rank-tracking dashboards before the listing itself is strong. ASO tooling is useful at scale; fundamentals are useful immediately.

A keyword method that takes one evening

  • Type your app's job into Play/App Store search and note every autocomplete suggestion — that is real user language, free.
  • Pull the titles/subtitles of the top 10 apps for your main phrase; count which words repeat.
  • Pick one primary phrase you can plausibly rank for (specific beats broad: "home workout no equipment" over "fitness").
  • Put it in the title, support it in subtitle/short description, and cover variants naturally in the long description.
  • Revisit in 4 weeks with console search-term data — real impressions beat any tool's estimates.

Running listing experiments properly

Google's store-listing experiments are free A/B tests most developers never open. Test one element at a time — icon first, then screenshot #1, then short description — give each test enough installs to matter (thousands, not dozens), and stop early only for clear losers. Two useful truths from our own runs: icon changes move conversion more than everything else combined, and "obvious" winners lose about half the time — which is precisely why you test instead of argue.

Pro tip

Localization is the most underused ASO lever: translating just your store listing (not the app) into 3–5 high-volume languages routinely lifts conversion in those markets by double digits, for an afternoon of work.

The loop that compounds

Ship the listing, measure conversion in the store consoles, change one element at a time (Google's listing experiments make this free), and fold what you learn back into paid creatives. Store listing and ad creative teach each other — the apps that grow cheapest run that loop deliberately. It is part of every launch package we deliver.
